SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT REASERCH CENTER
1. OVERALL CONCEPT
Our project proposes to create a highly recognizable and unique architectonic icon for both the city of Carbonia and the Sardinia.
An urban figure is proposed which fuses the existing mine area, the new public polyfunctional building, and the city itself into a legible, singular and memorable form. The main element of the design proposal is conceived as a continuous roof, which loosely frames permeable plazas, a main public hall and the courtyard in one continuous space.
The volume acts as a virtual space and sky enabling the collection of the multiple parts of the building into a coherent ensemble with a consistent image and multiple functionality, providing a clear signal to visitors and users of the extent of the building premises and an unmistakeable way-finding system.

1.1 TRANSLUCENT SKIN / COURTYARD
The translucent skin creates a highly flexible urban condition.
Largely independent from weather conditions, the spaces and subspaces below and inside the skin can be used as roofed exhibition space, for public events such as outdoor cinema or music, or can simply blend with the close city, becoming a publicly accessible part of the urban landscape. Currently lacking both of these aspects – a strong iconographic image as well as outdoor exhibition spaces – the translucent canopy will significantly improve the position of the City of Carbonia in comparison to the urban area of Cagliari.
Carefully taking into account its natural surrounding, the new volumes become a virtual part of the local landscape. The skin/volume shape gives way for vistas throughout the entire site and its iconic figure draws heavily on the spatial simultaneity between the ‘perfect flat′ of the sky and horizon, and the sorrounding hills, making it an active participant in the tension field of natural and man-made elements.

1.2 THE COURTYARD
The proposal organizes the on site traffic and all public access into one single courtyard an immediately perceivable logic: All arriving visitors will access the main building by the courtyard entrance. The courtyard connects all publicly accessible outdoor and indoor spaces.

1.2.1 TELESCOPE &ndash THE ELEVATED TERRACE
While the buildings serves also as structural support for the terrace, the elevated terrace the telecope serves as a powerful visual link between the existing city, the landscape and the new polyfunctional hall building.
This visual coherence is essential for the multifunctional hall to become a true catalyst for area as its iconic figure draws visitors towards the courtyard and the roofed outside areas, linking both element in a legible way.

1.3 A NEW LINK BETWEEN CITY AND PARK
Programmatically we imagine the polyfunctional hall to be not only part of the building complex, but also public urban space, turning it into the area's main catalyst.
All the functions inside the polyfuncional building (offices, meeting, laboratories, exhibition) are fused into one transformable hybrid building, with shared programs such as offices, ticketing, access, service zones and commissions serving both functions at the same time. It is conceived to take on any role from pure office use to music or meeting event &ndash or any blend in between, as its flexibility allows for a simultaneity of events.
The entrance to the hybrid building is formally emphasized in the form of a gate shaped figure under the elevated terrace. It is one of two corresponding accesses within the proposal &ndash one marking the main entrance to the courtyard, the other to the poly&ndashfunctional hall. From each of these entrance one can easily see the other, creating a strong visual link between the two enntrances and forming two clear anchors to the public space in between.

1.4 NEW RECEPTION PAVILION
The reception building unique shape marks the main entrance to the building, and to the ticketing and information area functions. Its sculptural figure makes it stand out of the composition framed by the volume.
During the day it is clearly visible within the industrial area’s vicinity, while at night it can be experienced as lit sculpture, emphasizing the catalytic character of the new area to transform atmosphere, image and function.
Its role as an easily read entrance area is also reflected in the program: Information booths, ticketing counters, visitors and exhibition spaces, offices, flexible halls are all located in this building. The entrance pavilions porous ground plan networks all local traffic (e.g. public pedestrian and bicycle paths, connections to the surrounding parking etc.) effectively with the surrounding fair functions (the roofed outside exhibition spaces, the fair pavilions, the boulevard etc.) in order to further support this programming within the urban context.

1.5 ROOFED PLAZA
The courtyard and the roofed plaza create a vivid urban outdoor space. All adjacent building branches can be opened up towards these spaces, creating one continuous surface that immediately connects the inside spaces with the urban plaza/courtyard outside.
The roofed plaza intentionally blurs the line between conventional 'outside space' and conditioned exhibition space inside of the pavilions, opening it up to a whole new array of possible uses.
A light–tower allows for natural ventilation and lighting, depending on what the clear–span hall is used for.

2 THE PASSIVE HOUSE DISTRICT
The discrict includes 7 passive houses. All energy of the passive house is conserved – no energy gets lost.
The energy balances only make sense within a well defined region with a well definded boundary. The boundary of the region is called the envelope.
In the case of heating or air conditioning the region of interest is the "heated or conditioned space". It is the volume in the building, which is conditioned to comfortable thermal conditions. In most cases it is convenient, to include "passively heated" parts, as long as the balance envelope will be simplified. The task for heating or air conditioning is just to keep the temperature inside of the envelope constant.
Concerning the heat flow going inside out through the envelope, it may be hot air moving out through a window. Such a "heat loss" would reduce the "Inner Energy" inside the volume; and that would cause the temperature drop inside of the building. Just that should be avoided in order to keep the conditons comfortable. Therefore the energy flow to the outside has to be compensated: Another heat flow has to be created, going outside in, to keep the level of the temperature.

IL CENTRO DI RICERCA PER LO SVILUPPO SOSTENIBILE E LE ENERGIE RINNOVABILI
